Chapter 1543: Do You Want To Join (Part 2) Since the three of them were Omegas, it meant they technically could have joined Steve’s pack without resistance. That was the natural order, an Alpha could command them, and they would have little choice but to follow. For a moment, Gary, Kai, and Lupus all expected it to be forced upon them. From the look of things they weren’t strong enough to deal with the pack of Werewolves. Perhaps Steve’s offer to travel together came with the condition of joining. But it never did. Steve didn’t pressure them. He didn’t demand loyalty or bind them with dominance. Instead, he was strangely casual, treating them as equals, simply happy for them to tag along. His focus seemed to be more on listening, sharing, and exchanging stories, who they were, where they had come from, and how their journeys had led them here. Kai narrowed his eyes as they walked. “When you say ‘come with you,’ what exactly do you mean? Where is it you’re heading? Are you taking us to one of the kingdoms?” Steve shook his head almost immediately, his answer firm. “We try to mingle with humans as little as possible,” he said. “It can’t be avoided entirely, we go from town to town sometimes, because that’s the way of survival. But as a rule, we keep our distance.” That alone was a surprise. Gary and Kai exchanged glances. Steve’s expression softened, though his tone stayed serious. “This might sound surprising to you, but we have our own camp. A place for people like us, and only for those like us.” “You mean... other werewolves?” Gary asked carefully. “Correct.” Steve winked, the small flash of humor not hiding the weight in his words. “I prefer to keep our pack away from humans as much as possible. You’ve seen what happens when we don’t. It ends up like this, betrayal, bloodshed, death. Why risk it when we don’t have to?” The three of them fell silent at that. Their instincts told them the same truth. Their very first encounter in this world had ended in betrayal at the hands of humans. And here, now, they had been saved by werewolves. Whether it was fate or irony, all three shared the same thought: perhaps it was better, for now, to follow Steve. The group began their descent down the mountain. Steve led them into the forest, his pack trailing close behind. It was clear the werewolves avoided human paths whenever possible, preferring to move through untouched terrain. Their pace was steady, their steps purposeful, and the three outsiders had no choice but to keep up. Gary’s mind was restless. He wanted to trust Steve, but his curiosity gnawed at him. Questions piled up until he could no longer keep them in. “Why did you save us?” he asked finally. “Or rather, how did you even know where we were? You said the innkeeper informed you, but how were you able to track us down so quickly?” Steve glanced back at him, then smiled knowingly. “All three of you seem fresh,” he said. “Has your werewolf lineage only recently awakened in your bloodline?” The three of them exchanged uneasy looks. They assumed this was Steve’s way of asking if they had only recently become werewolves. Following Kai’s earlier advice, they chose not to share too many details. It was safer to stay vague. In unison, they nodded. Steve continued. “Our pack’s purpose is to travel across the continent and save those like us. That’s what we do. You see, our werewolf bloodline is considered a mutation. It exists in countless families across generations, but not every bloodline activates. “In the past, there were families with dozens of children who carried the dormant mutation. They weren’t werewolves themselves, but the bloodline was there, waiting. The first signs usually show by the age of three. It used to be accepted that if a child showed no signs early, then they weren’t a werewolf, but even then, they could still carry the bloodline.” His voice grew heavier, sharper, as though the words came from memory. “But there are exceptions. There are those who awaken later. And when that happens, when the beast reveals itself late in life, families panic. They see it as a curse. Children are chased from their homes, cast out as monsters. “And then there are families who never even knew they carried the bloodline. To them, it’s a nightmare that comes out of nowhere. Many use this ignorance as an excuse, selling their own blood into slavery, branding their kin as weapons instead of kin.” Gary’s chest tightened as he listened. He remembered too vividly what it meant to be treated as something dangerous, something to be feared. Steve shook his head. “These days, there are some families who care for you, even if the bloodline awakens. But those cases are rare. More often, the bloodline itself is weakening. There are fewer and fewer cases of natural werewolves being born. Most of the ones alive today... are turned.” Kai’s eyes narrowed at the word. “Turned.” Steve nodded. “Regardless of how it happens, we try to help. Our pack exists to give them a place to belong. We take in werewolves who’ve lost their homes, who’ve been betrayed, who’ve been discarded by the world. We look after them. That’s why I saved you.” Gary’s question lingered still, though, and Steve caught it. “How did I know?” Steve grinned faintly. “I’ve done a few things for a few people in several towns. The innkeeper you met was one of them. Because of that, I’ve built a network, small tunnels of information spread across the continent. If there are werewolves nearby, we hear about it. Lucky for you three, I was already in the area when word reached me. Otherwise, who knows what might have happened to you.” He slowed his pace then, glancing at them with an open expression. “I’m happy to tell you more of my story once we reach the camp.
